Reimagined from a historic office building, the East Cary Health Center now delivers life-changing, low-barrier primary care, behavioral health, dental, and pharmacy services to downtown Richmond. The project was recognized with the Golden Hammer Award for Best Adaptive Reuse/Rehabilitation and advanced through the historic tax credit rehabilitation process to preserve the building’s character while upgrading its systems.
Clinics occupy the first floor for convenient street‑level access, with administrative offices and meeting spaces on the upper floors. The facility houses six medical exam rooms and eight dental operatories, supported by a dedicated nurse’s station, a centralized registration desk, and a waiting area to streamline patient flow. Support spaces include a 70‑person meeting room for community programs and training, staff breakrooms with lockers, and all‑gender restrooms to promote inclusivity.
The renovation replaced and modernized building infrastructure with new mechanical and electrical systems, a contemporary sprinkler system, and comprehensive accessibility upgrades including entrance ramps. Site improvements feature a reconfigured parking area with 27 surface spaces and a covered garage for 13 vehicles. Together these changes enable the organization to serve more patients and deliver integrated care under one roof.
