Springfield School Building Renovation Pouncey Tract Park

This 1920’s wood framed structure functioned as a two-room school building for African-American students under the supervision of pioneer educator Virginia E. Randolph until it was closed around 1950.  The building then became a private residence and was later donated to Henrico County for preservation.  The County then moved the building from its original location to Poucey Tract Park in 2011, where it had been awaiting a new purpose.

The building is now being renovated into a welcoming community meeting space that features historic displays and restrooms for the nearby pickleball area.  The building, largely abandoned for 10 years, required extensive work to address many structural issues and was subsequently almost totally gutted in order to properly attend to them.  Only the exterior bare stud walls, roof framing, roof deck, and metal roof panels were salvageable.  The building received a new insulated exterior skin, new windows and doors, new interior partitions and finishes, new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and new covered entry porches.
